Gunther vs. Pat McAfee took place at WWE Backlash 2025. Here are the highlights…

* Michael Cole noted on commentary that he was going to be biased during the match due to what Gunther did to himself and McAfee.

* McAfee utilized his athleticism and speed to hold his own against Gunther in the opening moments. McAfee dodged a chop, prompting the crowd to chant his name. After Gunther patted McAfee on the head, McAfee became fired up, but Gunther eventually took McAfee down with a chop. McAfee fought back with chops of his own but was then dropped by another chop from Gunther. Gunther continued to deliver offense as the crowd chanted “you tapped out” at him.

* McAfee mounted a comeback with several punt kicks, but Gunther kicked out at one. McAfee delivered a superkick, but Gunther blocked another attempt and hit a powerbomb. After Gunther applied a Boston crab, Michael Cole left the announce desk to motivate McAfee.

* Gunther pulled Cole into the ring, but McAfee managed to save Cole. Cole nearly cost Gunther the match by grabbing his foot as Gunther attempted a suplex on McAfee. Gunther recovered and applied his sleeper hold. McAfee almost escaped but eventually passed out, and Gunther was declared the winner. After the match, Gunther showed respect to McAfee, and the crowd gave McAfee a standing ovation.
